McCarthy applauds pupils and teachers
The provisional Key Stage 2 results were published today, showing huge improvements from Bristol’s schools over the past 11 years.
Kerry McCarthy, MP for Bristol East regularly visits the schools in her constituency and welcomed the news saying: “I want to thank teachers and teaching assistants, parents and pupils in Bristol for all their hard work this year.
“We won’t know the results for individual primary schools until later this year, but today’s provisional figures show great improvements from the City of Bristol area as a whole.
“The figures show that over the last decade Labour’s record investment as well as more teachers and teaching assistants have seen a huge increase in the number of children across Bristol getting to the expected level by the end of primary school – a change of over 20% between 1998 and today.
In fact, Bristol primary schools have achieved their best ever test results, according to statistics released by the government today, Tuesday 4 August.
Ten and eleven-year-olds across the city sat their Key Stage 2 Standard Assessment Tests (SATs) in May this year and provisional results show continued improvement in all three subject areas, English, Maths and Science. The percentage of pupils achieving Level 4 or above in their Key Stage 2 results in the City of Bristol in 2009 and 1998 is as follows:

This shows increased performance by pupils, teachers and schools in all three of the main subjects.
The percentage of children in Bristol achieving level 4 or above, the level appropriate for their age, are:
- English – 76 per cent (74 per cent in 2008)
- Maths – 74 per cent (73 per cent in 2008)
- Science – 85 per cent (82 per cent in 2008)
As these results are provisional, scores could still go up.
There have also been significant improvements in the proportion of pupils achieving Level 5, with 4% more reaching this higher level in Maths and 2% more achieving it in Science.
The percentage of children achieving level 4 or above in both English and Maths increased by 2% in Bristol this year, to 67%. This means Bristol is improving significantly faster than the national rate, where there was no change in performance year on year.
Cllr Barbara Janke, Leader of Bristol City Council, said: “Bristol is now closing the gap with comparable cities when it comes to achievement at primary school. Parents should be very encouraged by this set of results and children and teachers congratulated for their hard work.
“The future is looking bright for our primary schools. Currently, none are in special measures and we are welcoming 30 new headteachers to fill all vacant posts in September. Our expansion and refurbishment programme will see around £22.3m spent in the new school year on improving buildings, work starting on a brand new primary school in Bishopston and four new primary schools opening following amalgamations.”
Tom Burton, Assistant Head and Year 6 Teacher at St Barnabas CE Primary School, said: “These are the best results at Key Stage 2 the school has ever had. We are really pleased and proud of our children. This success is a reflection of their hard work and commitment during their time at the school, together with the quality of teaching and support from parents.”
