Colston Hall celebrates refurb with free show
Everyone is invited to join in celebrations marking the official, grand opening of Colston Hall’s shiny new foyer building this Friday. The opening promises a spectacular evening of free indoor and outdoor music starring some of Bristol’s best artists.
The event, which kick starts a 10-day celebration at the hall called ‘All About The Music’, has been co-ordinated by Bristol performance artists Cirque Bijou and features aerial performers and visuals projected onto the back of the new foyer as darkness falls.
The evening starts at 5.30pm when the doors to the new foyer are officially opened and the first acts, including: Akumapa Drummers from Ghana and the Gasworks Choir from Bristol draw people into the building. The music and performances continue throughout the night, with Andy Sheppard’s 100-strong Saxophone Massive Choir performing in the closed Trenchard Street alongside beatboxers and wall runners from Circomedia.
The event will also showcase a premiere of a new choral piece from Bristol composer Richard Barnard and a special performance of Adrian Utley’s 90 Massed Guitars who will raise the roof off the new foyer with their huge sound.
Graeme Howell, Colston Hall’s Director, said: “The new foyer is a landmark building that will make a real difference to the customer experience of visiting the hall. This special event has been programmed with Bristol artists at the forefront to give the foyer the noisy and visually stunning opening it deserves.”
The opening night is the beginning of 10 days of celebration to mark the opening of the building, and features performances from artists from Bristol and as far afield as South Africa.
Highlights include: a one-off commission from Roni Size; BBC’s Nature’s Great Events with Sir David Attenborough and Invada Invasion curated by Portishead’s Geoff Barrow.
