Celebrating Age Festival in Bristol

bristol-ageBuilding on the success of its first two years, the week-long Celebrating Age Festival 2009 will take place across the city from September 28 to October 3, culminating in a grand finale at the Council House, College Green, Bristol. Exciting line-ups; interesting speakers; demonstrations and lively debate are among the attractions of this year’s Celebrating Age festival.

The festival offers a wide variety of opportunities for visitors to get involved from Silver Surfer technology sessions to yoga; taking part in African dance and music sessions; enjoying a tea dance or Tai Chi, or simply having a chat while strolling around the city centre.

In addition, there are information-packed workshops on independent living support and rights and benefits.

On Saturday, October 3, the festival focus switches to the Council House, College Green, with an opening ceremony conducted by the Lord Mayor followed by a programme of music and dance including the Filtones Choir; the Salvation Army Band; Fred Wedlock and the African Sambistas.

There will also be flower-arranging demonstrations from Chelsea Gold Cup-winner Jon Wheatley; a wide variety of stalls; cooking demonstrations; therapy and health checks and refreshments.

And there will be a thought-provoking debate on equalities chaired by leading local businessman John Savage which should encourage lively exchanges.

Councillor Barbara Janke, Leader of Bristol City Council, said: “The Celebrating Age festival was launched three years ago to challenge prejudices about age and to celebrate both the contributions of older people and the opportunities which come with age and increased leisure time.

“This year’s event promises to be the best yet with a line-up of exciting performances; demonstrations; engaging speakers and lively debate.

“I would like to thank all the people who have worked hard to make this year’s festival happen. I hope as many of you as possible come along and join us in celebrating age and the contribution older people make to life in Bristol “
