£200k for South Bristol swimmers

simon_cookSwimmers in south Bristol are set to benefit from a £200,000 cash boost to improve swimming facilities at the Grade II-listed Bristol South Pool, thanks to the city council.

Improvements to the changing facilities, internal repairs, refurbishment works, deep cleaning and redecoration and new disabled access are key elements of the capital improvement works.

Works are set to begin in December and will involve the closure of the pool for approximately 12 weeks. The aim is to complete the works during the winter months when the number of swimmers is low.

The first phase of the proposed project will focus on internal works and include:

  • Redecoration of the existing shower/toilet areas
  • Installation of a disabled changing/toilet/shower facility and hoist to assist disabled users into/out of the pool
  • Redecoration of the foyer, including the lowering of the counters
  • Installation of a disabled entrance with a ramp
  • Reconfiguration of cubicles to include mother/toddler/family changing facilities
  • Redecoration of the ceilings above the changing cubicles
  • Roof repairs and minor building repairs

The second phase, which requires listed-building consent, includes the removal of the wall located on Dean Lane to provide a drop off area and disabled parking.

Councillor Simon Cook, deputy leader and cabinet member for culture, sport and capital projects said: “Bristol South pool is a much loved-pool and in order to retain and attract more swimmers we will be carrying out a planned programme of improvement works this winter.

“Obviously, we will have to close the pool, but we have chosen the winter months to minimise any disruption and inconvenience to swimmers.

“These works will not only up-grade the pool’s facilities, but will – for the first time – make it more accessible for disabled swimmers. South Bristol Pool is a key element in our swimming strategy to provide quality facilities for local people to enjoy.

“This investment is the first step to up-grading the pool’s facilities and plans are currently being worked on to see what additional steps can be taken to implement future improvements. We of course still maintain our aspiration to add a gym and fitness facility as part of a complete £7 million refurbishment when resources become available.

“Our investment in Bristol South Pool is another example of the positive measures we are taking to promote health and fitness for everyone in the city and a further demonstration of our continued commitment to listen to local people and respond to their needs.”
